What is vision?

Imagine a steam locomotive.
He is carrying valuable cargo from one station to another, and until he delivers it from point A, point B will not receive it. This is a story about our vision: we see not just with an eye that flutters its eyelashes. The eye receives information from the outside and transmits it to the brain. The brain, in turn, processes it and gives us a signal: the tree is far away, it is tall, green and sways in the wind. In other words, vision is one of the analyzers that helps us perceive information that happens around us. Analyzers receive information with their receptors, encode it and transmit it along the nerve chain to the brain, which then gives it to us in a form that is understandable and familiar to us. What analyzers do we have?
• Visual (eye) • Auditory (ear) • Olfactory (nose) • Gustatory (mouth) • Sensorimotor (skin) Thanks to them, we receive information from the external environment.
Why do we need so many signaling and transmission systems?
To feel comfortable in the space around us, stay healthy and perceive the world in its entirety.
Why is vision so important to us?
The fact is that thanks to the visual analyzer, we perceive up to 90% of all information from the world around us through images that help us quickly navigate a situation or experience emotions.
And for newborn babies, vision allows them to quickly adapt to the world, fully develop, and become independent - which means they get the opportunity to achieve any goals they want to achieve. Why do some babies have good vision, while others do not?
A very common cause of visual impairment in babies is premature birth.
The formation of a complex eye system ends around the fortieth week of pregnancy. And if the baby is born earlier, there may be underdevelopment of the structure of the eyeball, vascular system or retina. An interesting fact: the most complex structure of the retina of the eye is formed from the same group of cells as the brain and spinal cord; one might say, it is a continuation of the brain. What visual impairments are possible in newborn babies? Retinopathy.
These are vascular disorders of the retina.
They occur in premature babies: the earlier the child is born, the greater the risk of underdevelopment of the arteries and veins in the retina. The incubator in which the baby is placed can add additional problems. In it, the child receives intensive oxygen therapy, which activates breathing. At the same time, the vascular system of the retina additionally suffers from oxygen overload, since normally metabolic processes in it occur without its participation. Optic nerve atrophy.
This is the process of death of the optic nerve fibers - the conductor that transmits information from the retina to the brain for processing.
Atrophy can be complete (PAZN) or partial (PAZN). Its causes can be different: hereditary factors, pathologies of pregnancy, lesions during childbirth, diseases of the eyeball, inflammatory processes in the brain. Accommodation disturbance (myopia or farsightedness)
and other common diseases, both congenital and acquired: strabismus, astigmatism, optic nerve hypoplasia, etc.

Some of these pathologies can cause partial or complete blindness. And all of them will definitely slow down the child’s development. Therefore, they need to be diagnosed and treated as early as possible. Important point:

If the doctor has prescribed glasses for your child, make sure he wears them.
The fact is that vision is an acquired skill. Just as a baby gradually learns to walk, he also learns to see. And for him to learn this, the brain must receive a clear picture from the retina. If this does not happen, due to some pathology, the brain gets used to seeing poorly. And this, in turn, affects the development of all the child’s skills - let us remind you that through vision we receive 90% of information about the world. How are visual impairments in children diagnosed?
As a rule, an ophthalmological examination alone is not enough.
A child, unlike an adult, will not tell what hurts him, what and how he sees or does not see. Methods of deeper examination of the eyes and brain help to establish an accurate diagnosis: OCT, EPI, VVP (optical coherence tomography, electrophysiological studies, visual evoked potentials). It also happens that, according to the results of the examination, the visual analyzer turns out to be normal, but the child does not use his vision to the fullest (does not make eye contact with an adult). We will talk about this type of violation below. What symptoms does your baby have that may raise suspicions of visual impairment?
• The child does not look into your eyes, it is as if he is looking through your face. • The child does not close his eyes in response to bright light. • At the age of 3 months, the child does not follow with his eyes the movement of a bright toy in your hands (horizontally, vertically, diagonally and in a circle) and does not make attempts to reach for it. • He sees only those objects that are directly in front of him, and does not see those that are slightly to the side - the so-called tunnel syndrome. • During the period of 7-9 months, a child does not develop a pointing gesture - this may mean that the baby does not determine the distance of space. If you notice such manifestations in your baby, be sure to show him to an ophthalmologist.

How can a speech pathologist help a child if the doctor has diagnosed a particular vision pathology in the child?
And is the lack of eye contact always the result of vision pathology?
The task of the teacher-defectologist is to first study the child’s medical history obtained from the doctor’s report in order to clarify the degree of disturbance of the analyzer.
Then he observes the baby’s indicative reactions (visual, auditory, tactile) in unfamiliar conditions: a new room, an unfamiliar adult, new toys. And he makes a conclusion whether the child uses all analyzers at the same time to process information, which of the analyzers uses better, which is worse, which one he does not use at all. Further, as a rule, the work of a defectologist with a child follows one of two paths: First:
If the fact of a violation of the visual analyzer is established, the defectologist selects a system of games and activities that will help the child use the residual functions of the analyzer and thereby develop it.
Or, in the case of severe pathology, he will find workarounds to replace his work with other analyzers as much as possible. Why is this being done? Here it is important for parents to understand that a child whose visual analyzer has been closed or weakly functioning since birth is disconnected from interaction with adults who show and explain the world around him. This means that the baby will be far behind his peers in development, despite the fact that his other functions, except vision, are normal. This is the case when the diagnosis of “developmental delay” means secondary delay. That is, for example, a visually impaired child will have difficulty learning to walk not because he has problems with his legs, but because it is more difficult for him to navigate in space. Therefore, the baby who actively learns to use the entire complex of his analyzers will quickly master speech, begin to walk, and master other skills necessary for life. Another example:
when diagnosing optic nerve atrophy, a defectologist may discover that the baby uses his vision - he reaches for a toy, determines its distance.
This is a feature of CHAZN: the impulse from the retina to the brain and back is preserved, but not fully; the child is able to partially perceive and determine information. And then the task of the defectologist becomes to activate the visual analyzer as much as possible, including turning on the other analyzers. Such complex work stimulates the active development of neural connections in the baby, and over time, vision can be partially or completely restored. Second:
If there is no damage to the visual analyzer, the entire functional chain from the eye to the brain is normal, but visual contact is absent or difficult - then we can talk about the emerging characteristics of the child’s psyche (various emotional disorders, including the autism spectrum, genetic diseases, mental retardations development leading to intellectual impairment in the future). In this case, in order to clarify the diagnosis, the defectologist recommends that parents consult doctors - a child neurologist and a psychiatrist. And then he develops a system of activities that stimulate the child’s development of focused attention, the skill of eye-to-eye contact, and an emotional response when communicating with an adult. What is it for? The fact is that a child with mental disabilities has a distorted picture of the world’s perception, and this prevents him from adapting to the world of adults, whose communication system is built on emotional interaction. If a child lacks these skills, then the delay in development will increase, he will not be able to adequately perceive the world and fit comfortably into it. Let’s summarize: the defectologist puts into operation all the baby’s analyzers that are capable of working, in whole or in part. It creates a system of activities in which neural cells begin to activate, come to life, and establish connections. As a result, all 5 analyzers act in conjunction, stimulating the development of the nervous system and brain, and the child gets the opportunity to actively and fully develop.
