Often parents are faced with the fact that children do not remember information well at school. Schoolchildren listen carefully only to what interests them, and ignore the rest. Memory acts selectively. Another problem that arises at school is the inability to retell a large text. As a result, academic performance decreases.
You can train your memory and teach children to retell texts on various topics even in preschool age. For this purpose, the material is presented in the form of reference diagrams, or mnemonic tables. You can start learning as early as two years old, when the child knows some fairy tales and tries to retell them, but confuses the characters and the sequence of events. Mnemonic tables for preschoolers are first compiled by an adult based on fairy tales known to the child.
The pictures in the cells are the heroes of fairy tales. The fairy tale “Kolobok” is very convenient in this situation, where events are repeated and the characters change. For the smallest children, mnemonic tables of four to nine cells are suitable. The adult and the child go through several mnemonic tables and analyze where the heroes of fairy tales hid. We draw the following mnemonic tables for preschoolers together with the child. Children quickly learn to make tables. Subsequently, the children themselves create tables for the information provided, complicating them and increasing the number of cells.
What is the secret of mnemonic tables?
Memory development occurs due to the constant recoding of verbal information into visual images and vice versa. As a result, information is scrolled through the memory several times and is inevitably remembered.
For preschoolers aged 4-6 years, the tasks can be made more complicated: add heroes from other fairy tales to the table and ask the child to determine which heroes are superfluous. The second option is to confuse the heroes of two fairy tales in one table and give the task to distribute them across two tables. The third option is to cut several mnemonic tables and then restore them. There can be many such variants of games with mnemonic tables, or tables for memorization: restoring missing pictures, rearranging pictures in the right order, etc. Gradually, a whole card index is created from the cut tables. Cards can be scattered and an adult, reading a fairy tale, asks the child to find the desired picture.
Using mnemonic tables, you can study any topic with your child, memorize any text, for example, topics on ecology, seasons, animals, birds. Tables are especially convenient in the process of studying the seasons, when you need to remember their main features. At school age, children will have to memorize large texts and retell them. The skill of compiling mnemonic tables will help them create a reference diagram of any text based on associations and visual images. You can always take such a diagram to school and use it as a hint.
Thus, mnemonic tables are useful to use in classes with preschool children for the development of visual and auditory memory. They are useful not only in individual conversations, but also in groups, when several people can work with one fairy tale plot. If you don't know where to start compiling your first table, refer to the materials offered on our website. Here you will find examples of tables that you can take as a sample and begin to analyze with your baby. The tables are easy to download from the website, print and use in your first lessons. We are confident that you will successfully create the following tables yourself.

Using mnemonic techniques to work on fairy tales (middle group)
Lately I have been very interested in the topic of MNEMOTECHNIQUES. It is her techniques that I try to include as much as possible in my work with preschoolers.
Goal: to facilitate a simplified process of memorizing the content of fairy-tale works by consistently reflecting them in illustrations.
Tasks:
— enrich children’s visual perception through illustrated presentations of fairy tales;
— enrich and activate vocabulary;
- systematize knowledge of the contents of all familiar fairy tales thanks to free access to the album, i.e., its use by children in independent activities.
The fairy-tale works in this album are presented in the form of colorful illustrations, which are arranged uniformly, i.e.:
— illustrations for fairy tales follow each other from left to right;
— illustrations for one fairy tale can be located either on one sheet of A4 page or on two sheets.
This album can be used both in joint and independent activities of children.
The principle of working on this album comes down to the fact that the illustrations allow you to retain a certain amount of knowledge.
Part of the album’s material was presented in the form of brochures “Telling Tales from Pictures”
at the regional Fair-Exhibition of Pedagogical Innovations on March 17, 2022 and became a significant addition to the Fair ranks of MBDOU – kindergarten No. 9.
