Are you ready to learn the secrets of speech breathing? Then let's begin.

Have you ever thought that our speech is a voiced exhalation? And it is especially important for announcers to breathe correctly so that their voice sounds clear, understandable and, if you like, tasty.

We have prepared for you a selection of exercises that will help you develop speech breathing, get rid of any flaws in your voice, and also maintain your speech and your mood at their best. After all, if you are charged with energy and breathe correctly, then your voice will sound 100%!

The workplace of a professional announcer is always next to a microphone, which treacherously produces any sound, even one that is not audible in everyday speech. This leads to the conclusion that it is important to be able to control your breathing, its frequency, and its audibility. You must be able to draw in enough air in a short period of time to calmly deliver a speech in one breath without becoming out of breath.

How to breathe correctly?

Most people are accustomed to breathing through the chest, but such breathing is not correct, and with it you will not achieve the desired results, since when breathing through the chest you limit your body's supply of oxygen.

What kind of breathing is correct?

Breathing with the stomach, or more precisely, with the diaphragm, is considered correct and more useful. When you inhale, the diaphragm tightens and lowers, allowing the lungs to fully expand. When you exhale, it relaxes, the dome of the diaphragm rises, compressing the lungs and pushing air out of them.

Diaphragmatic breathing is considered correct breathing.

How to learn to breathe correctly?

  • First of all, lie on your back, close your eyes and relax. Nice start? :)
  • Now place one hand on your stomach and the other hand on your chest. Inhale and notice which hand remains motionless and which one rises. It is important to ensure that when you inhale, the hand that lies on your stomach rises.
  • After you learn how to breathe with your stomach while lying down, get back on your feet and repeat your skill while standing.
  • Voila! You have already mastered the correct breathing technique! But we can’t stop there.

Rules for conducting breathing exercises

Undoubtedly, classes will be most effective if they are carried out not only during a lesson with a speech therapist, but also periodically repeated at home. Parents need to remember that breathing exercises and games can tire the child and even cause slight dizziness, so it is important to consider some conditions:

  • It is best to exercise before meals.
  • The room in which classes are held must be well ventilated. It's even better if you have the opportunity to exercise outdoors.
  • You cannot use the artillery attack tactics. Classes should not be long. 3-5 minutes at a time is quite enough.
  • A teacher or one of the parents needs to monitor the correctness of the breathing process. During breathing, the shoulders should not rise, the muscles of the neck, face or abdomen should not tense.

Speech breathing exercises

"Warm-up"

First you need to tune in to the exercises and just breathe a little. Even if you are a professional, warming up is a very important component of any exercise. Therefore, under no circumstances should it be neglected.

Take a short but deep breath in through your nose, hold for a couple of seconds, then exhale smoothly through your mouth.

Don't forget to monitor your breathing correctly! We breathe only with the stomach, not with the chest. To make it easier for you, do not remove your hands from your stomach and chest during exercises, this will make it easier to monitor your breathing technique.

Let's voice the exhalation

Inhale, then exhale. But you don’t need to play your favorites, just take a breath again and as you exhale say the following sounds:

  • Eeeeeeeee
  • Eeeeeee
  • Aaaaaaaaa
  • Ooooooh
  • Uuuuuuu

Important! Pronounce the sounds in exactly this sequence.

The sound “and” promotes intense blood circulation. The sound “e” activates the throat (put your hand on your neck and feel the vibration). “A” includes the chest area, “o” increases blood supply to the heart and, finally, “y” has a positive effect on the lower abdomen.

Now we invite you to dream a little!

"Tarzan"

First, imagine yourself in the role of the famous Tarzan. Stand up straight, clench your hands into fists, take a deep breath, then loudly say the sound “ee” and at the same time beat your chest with your fists, imitating the famous hero. Repeat this algorithm, “aaa”, “oooh”, “oooh”.

This exercise not only effectively affects your breathing and voice, but also protects you from colds. After exercise, your bronchi are cleared of mucus, which makes your breathing more free.

"Flowers"

Now imagine that at the moment you are in a flower field or in a flower shop and inhaling the aromas of flowers. Place one hand on your stomach, the other on your ribs. When you inhale, your stomach should move forward and your ribs should expand. The inhalation should be short. Then exhale smoothly and slowly, saying “pfffff.” Your stomach should gradually tighten and your ribs should lower. We recommend repeating the exercise 2-3 times.

"Candle"

For this exercise you will need narrow paper (2 cm wide, 8-10 cm long). Imagine that this paper is a candle flame. Then start blowing out the candle. But remember, you are not making a wish now by trying to blow out, or even blow away, all the candles at once! Now you are trying to achieve even breathing so that our paper flame does not go out, but only tilts a little. If the paper is in the same position throughout the entire exhalation, then you have achieved evenness in your breathing. If the paper trembles, leans back and forth, then you still need to work on its evenness.

"Check"

Take a breath and raise your hands up. Then lower them, exhaling and counting out loud at the same time (one, two, three...). Try to achieve such a result that when you exhale you can count to as many numbers as possible. Then repeat this exercise, counting backwards.

"Getting air"

Now you and I mentally find ourselves on the ski track, and it seems that we are lucky to get to the competition! But you need to put your feet together and start pushing off with imaginary sticks, first with one hand, then with the other, gradually accelerating, while squatting slightly, then the squats should be deeper and deeper. Now let's start counting out loud. It is important not to monitor your breathing, but to take in air “automatically.” Here you should enjoy the sound of your voice, learning to inhale discreetly when necessary.

If you find it difficult to do this exercise with numbers, pronounce the drawn-out sound “m” in combination with different vowels (mma, mme, mmo, etc.). This will help relieve vocal tension and require less release of your energy.

In addition, the sound “m” helps to activate the work of the chest and abdomen. Without opening your mouth, say the “m” sound first quietly, then a little louder, and a third time as loud as you can until your vocal cords tighten. When you hold your hand on your stomach, you will immediately feel the vibration.

Poems, novels, plays, etc.

Choose your favorite passage from a novel, story, poem and try to read it in one breath. Over time, try to add a line or a sentence, not forgetting about the manner in which information is presented (try not only to say everything in one breath, but also to use your voice to describe what you are talking about).

When performing exercises, it is important to feel as comfortable as possible.

Tongue Twisters

Everyone's favorite tongue twisters, proverbs and sayings are an excellent assistant in the development of speech breathing. Try to read a tongue twister, saying or proverb in one breath, also paying attention not only to breathing, but also to the clarity of speech.

LiveInternetLiveInternet

The vast majority of business people dream of speaking clearly and convincingly. Many people are confident that they speak well and are sincerely surprised to find that they are poorly listened to.

To speak beautifully and clearly, you need to be able to breathe correctly!

And lesson 3 on speech technique is devoted to breathing. Breathing is one of the most important components in your voice work. Without proper breathing, the sound of your voice will be dull, flat, and your vocal apparatus will quickly get tired, even under light loads.

Complete all the exercises presented in the video: you will speak twice as well as you speak today. When performing breathing exercises, place your right hand on your stomach.

"Dog" . We reach the chin with our tongue and breathe actively, gradually increasing the pace. We control the stomach with our hands and feel the muscle contraction.

Let's do a reset. We reach the chin with our tongue and exhale forcefully. Repeat 3 times.

Calmly exhale the remaining air.

"Shooting". Right hand on the stomach. We fold our left hand into a tube, bring it to our mouth and begin, as if, to shoot cherries in the air.

We supplement with three shots in one direction.

We supplement with physical activity. We run around the room and quickly - quickly shoot at each other.

"Silent man." We cover our mouth with both hands. We begin to exhale actively and very strongly.

We remove our hands and calmly exhale the remaining air.

We inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth with sound. We control breathing with our right hand. At the end we exhale as strongly as possible. Repeat 3 times.

Well, a little theory... Breathing can be divided into three types: upper, mixed and lower. Only the latter is correct. It goes by different names - diaphragmatic, diaphragmatic-costal, intercostal, abdominal breathing. These are different names for the same thing.

When they are born, everyone, both boys and girls, breathes the same way - through their tummies. Growing up, taking on the burden of responsibility, being nervous, and being exposed to serious stress, most girls lose this ability to breathe with their stomachs. Men mostly retain their lower breathing.

You need to learn how to draw in large quantities of air, and not, as we are used to, be able to retain it, spend it sparingly, so that it lasts until a logical pause in speech, during which you replenish your air supply. It is also very important that your speech breathing is silent and your air supply is replenished quickly enough. Physiological or phonation breathing is breathing while you speak. The main muscle responsible for inhalation is the diaphragm. This muscle separates the abdominal cavity from the thoracic cavity and their group, which controls the ribs of the chest. For a person, natural breathing is breathing while lying on your back with relaxed muscles.

Place one hand on your stomach and the other on your chest. Take a deep breath through your nose. The chest and shoulders rise - these are signs of upper breathing. And if your chest and shoulders remain in place, your stomach slowly straightens as you inhale, and as you exhale it decreases in volume and seems to be glued to the spine, then you have lower breathing. But you also need breathing exercises - in order to warm up the vocal apparatus and prepare it for work.

Inhale so that the hand on your chest remains motionless, and the other hand on your stomach rises. Then exhale. It is necessary to achieve light and free movements during abdominal breathing.

Then try doing the same while standing. In order for lower breathing to become habitual for you, you should devote a sufficient amount of time to it. It is better to do such exercises in the morning.

To feel the work of the respiratory muscles, you need to find the required body position. While standing, begin to slouch and relax. Next, lift your shoulders and chest, throwing them back. So you seem to “put” them on your spine. Your back is strengthened, and your arms, neck and shoulders remain free. This body position should become natural and familiar to you.

Without strong active breathing there will be no good voice, because a person is a wind musical instrument. Some people believe that active breathing is necessary to pronounce vowel sounds, but you won’t be able to make consonants without breathing. Diction and speech intelligibility depend precisely on the quality of breathing.

One of the most important skills is to train inhaling through the nose instead of the usual “grasping” of air with the mouth:

  • With your mouth open, inhale and exhale through your nose. Repeat 10 times.
  • Hand on stomach. We inhale slowly, counting to 4 in our minds. Exhale without delay, again counting to 4. During the exercise, it is important to feel with your hand how your stomach rises and falls. If these movements are difficult to distinguish, you should tilt your body forward, placing your hands on your lower back. As you inhale, you should feel the expansion of this area. Each next inhalation and exhalation we increase the count by one (5,6,7...).

Breast breathing is considered optimal; it needs to be developed:

  • Starting position standing. As you inhale, imagine that you are smelling a flower. Exhale smoothly, with the sound “pfft”, while you need to draw in your stomach. Inhale – short, exhale – long.
  • Classic exercise. You need to inhale, and as you exhale, in “one” breath, say a long phrase.

Correct breathing is the basis of our speech. What is diaphragmatic breathing and how to learn to speak on a support in order to prolong the quality and clarity of speech, says Yulia Vyalova - teacher of the Art of Speech courses at the St. Petersburg School of Television
