Are you ready to learn the secrets of speech breathing? Then let's begin.
Have you ever thought that our speech is a voiced exhalation? And it is especially important for announcers to breathe correctly so that their voice sounds clear, understandable and, if you like, tasty.
We have prepared for you a selection of exercises that will help you develop speech breathing, get rid of any flaws in your voice, and also maintain your speech and your mood at their best. After all, if you are charged with energy and breathe correctly, then your voice will sound 100%!
The workplace of a professional announcer is always next to a microphone, which treacherously produces any sound, even one that is not audible in everyday speech. This leads to the conclusion that it is important to be able to control your breathing, its frequency, and its audibility. You must be able to draw in enough air in a short period of time to calmly deliver a speech in one breath without becoming out of breath.
How to breathe correctly?
Most people are accustomed to breathing through the chest, but such breathing is not correct, and with it you will not achieve the desired results, since when breathing through the chest you limit your body's supply of oxygen.
What kind of breathing is correct?
Breathing with the stomach, or more precisely, with the diaphragm, is considered correct and more useful. When you inhale, the diaphragm tightens and lowers, allowing the lungs to fully expand. When you exhale, it relaxes, the dome of the diaphragm rises, compressing the lungs and pushing air out of them.
Diaphragmatic breathing is considered correct breathing.
How to learn to breathe correctly?
- First of all, lie on your back, close your eyes and relax. Nice start?
- Now place one hand on your stomach and the other hand on your chest. Inhale and notice which hand remains motionless and which one rises. It is important to ensure that when you inhale, the hand that lies on your stomach rises.
- After you learn how to breathe with your stomach while lying down, get back on your feet and repeat your skill while standing.
- Voila! You have already mastered the correct breathing technique! But we can’t stop there.
What does speaking technique give?
- Voice endurance
- Confident voice that conveys a feeling of reliability and trust
- Managing distance with listeners
- Influence by voice (verbal influence)
- Clear and clear pronunciation reduces the time it takes listeners to perceive information, which means it saves time and increases the effectiveness of speech action
Speech is a tool with which we can influence other people. Training (course) “Speech Technique” is a high-quality adjustment of the sound of your speech.
Speech breathing exercises
"Warm-up"
First you need to tune in to the exercises and just breathe a little. Even if you are a professional, warming up is a very important component of any exercise. Therefore, under no circumstances should it be neglected.
Take a short but deep breath in through your nose, hold for a couple of seconds, then exhale smoothly through your mouth.
Don't forget to monitor your breathing correctly! We breathe only with the stomach, not with the chest. To make it easier for you, do not remove your hands from your stomach and chest during exercises, this will make it easier to monitor your breathing technique.
Let's voice the exhalation
Inhale, then exhale. But you don’t need to play your favorites, just take a breath again and as you exhale say the following sounds:
- Eeeeeeeee
- Eeeeeee
- Aaaaaaaaa
- Ooooooh
- Uuuuuuu
Important! Pronounce the sounds in exactly this sequence.
The sound “and” promotes intense blood circulation. The sound “e” activates the throat (put your hand on your neck and feel the vibration). “A” includes the chest area, “o” increases blood supply to the heart and, finally, “y” has a positive effect on the lower abdomen.
Now we invite you to dream a little!
"Tarzan"
First, imagine yourself in the role of the famous Tarzan. Stand up straight, clench your hands into fists, take a deep breath, then loudly say the sound “ee” and at the same time beat your chest with your fists, imitating the famous hero. Repeat this algorithm, “aaa”, “oooh”, “oooh”.
This exercise not only effectively affects your breathing and voice, but also protects you from colds. After exercise, your bronchi are cleared of mucus, which makes your breathing more free.
"Flowers"
Now imagine that at the moment you are in a flower field or in a flower shop and inhaling the aromas of flowers. Place one hand on your stomach, the other on your ribs. When you inhale, your stomach should move forward and your ribs should expand. The inhalation should be short. Then exhale smoothly and slowly, saying “pfffff.” Your stomach should gradually tighten and your ribs should lower. We recommend repeating the exercise 2-3 times.
"Candle"
For this exercise you will need narrow paper (2 cm wide, 8-10 cm long). Imagine that this paper is a candle flame. Then start blowing out the candle. But remember, you are not making a wish now by trying to blow out, or even blow away, all the candles at once! Now you are trying to achieve even breathing so that our paper flame does not go out, but only tilts a little. If the paper is in the same position throughout the entire exhalation, then you have achieved evenness in your breathing. If the paper trembles, leans back and forth, then you still need to work on its evenness.
"Check"
Take a breath and raise your hands up. Then lower them, exhaling and counting out loud at the same time (one, two, three...). Try to achieve such a result that when you exhale you can count to as many numbers as possible. Then repeat this exercise, counting backwards.
"Getting air"
Now you and I mentally find ourselves on the ski track, and it seems that we are lucky to get to the competition! But you need to put your feet together and start pushing off with imaginary sticks, first with one hand, then with the other, gradually accelerating, while squatting slightly, then the squats should be deeper and deeper. Now let's start counting out loud. It is important not to monitor your breathing, but to take in air “automatically.” Here you should enjoy the sound of your voice, learning to inhale discreetly when necessary.
If you find it difficult to do this exercise with numbers, pronounce the drawn-out sound “m” in combination with different vowels (mma, mme, mmo, etc.). This will help relieve vocal tension and require less release of your energy.
In addition, the sound “m” helps to activate the work of the chest and abdomen. Without opening your mouth, say the “m” sound first quietly, then a little louder, and a third time as loud as you can until your vocal cords tighten. When you hold your hand on your stomach, you will immediately feel the vibration.
Poems, novels, plays, etc.
Choose your favorite passage from a novel, story, poem and try to read it in one breath. Over time, try to add a line or a sentence, not forgetting about the manner in which information is presented (try not only to say everything in one breath, but also to use your voice to describe what you are talking about).
When performing exercises, it is important to feel as comfortable as possible.
Tongue Twisters
Everyone's favorite tongue twisters, proverbs and sayings are an excellent assistant in the development of speech breathing. Try to read a tongue twister, saying or proverb in one breath, also paying attention not only to breathing, but also to the clarity of speech.

And now a little more about how to take this course.
Why do you need good diction?
Teacher, educator, TV presenter, actor, singer, speaker are just a small part of the professions where having perfect diction plays a big role. In general, any person needs good diction in everyday life. People with perfect diction find it easier to:
- find a job, friends;
- convey your thoughts to listeners;
- make a good impression during a speech;
- attract the attention of the audience.
Diction is a fundamental element of human culture. In addition, the presence of speech defects gives rise to complexes that accompany a person throughout his life.
How to improve your child's speech
For any child, parents are role models in everything, including spoken language. To develop good speech skills in children, parents themselves must possess them. You should always talk to your baby at a level higher than his own. It is important to articulate well, to pronounce with different intonations, like a question and an answer. Thus, the child will constantly improve his speech.
While the child is still small, unfamiliar words need to be repeated many times (this can cause difficulties) so that he remembers them and pronounces them with clear articulation. If by the age of 5-6 years the child has a diction disorder and speaks indistinctly, do not neglect visiting a professional speech therapist for speech correction, he will help correct the situation. You need to understand that improving your vocabulary is only possible with your help: read books, poems and communicate clearly with your child.
Components of diction
Diction has its own components, and even an adult can and should work with them, thereby improving his speech in the process.
The components of diction are as follows:
- Correct articulation is the location of the organs of articulation in the position necessary for the correct pronunciation of sounds.
- Clear articulation – accurate pronunciation of sounds and syllables within a word. The clarity of articulation determines the intelligibility of speech. Clear pronunciation of sounds and syllables directly depends on the training of the articulatory apparatus.
- Manner of pronunciation is the way of pronouncing certain words inherent in an individual. The peculiarity of stretching or “swallowing” some syllables, making pauses at the beginning or end of a word, adding extraneous sounds between words, filler words, the pace of pronunciation - all this is a manner of pronunciation.
Causes of poor diction
Poor diction occurs in both children and adults. Speech therapy names several reasons for diction disorders:
- Physiological . For example, congenital anomalies (underdevelopment of the frenulum of the tongue, pathology of bone tissue, malocclusion).
- Biological , when speech disorders are associated with adverse factors that arose in childhood (serious infections, injuries), or with genetic predisposition.
- Social . Pronunciation disorder occurs due to self-doubt, personal complexes, shyness, and problems communicating with others. Such a person speaks quietly and unintelligibly, swallowing sounds.
