How Su Jok Therapy is Used by a Speech Pathologist to Activate Speech

Hello, dear subscribers! In this article I will tell you about an unconventional method of speech stimulation, in other words, how to use su jok in speech therapy. Undoubtedly, one of the most important indicators of a child’s mental health is speech. She helps the child integrate into society in order to become a full member of it.

The child must be able to summarize and compose a coherent story in order to communicate freely and express his thoughts and feelings. The ability to speak is closely related to motor skills, because their centers are located nearby. As they say, a child's speech is at his fingertips. If the baby speaks poorly, then his fingers are also weak.

Undoubtedly, recently there have been many children with various speech pathologies. And not only that, they have problems with fine motor skills and sensory development. Speech underdevelopment is caused by:

  • communication problems,
  • emotional - volitional disorders,
  • various functional personality disorders,
  • problems with mastering educational material.

We conditionally divide into two types of methods that a speech therapist uses:

  1. Directly affecting the speech apparatus
  2. Acting indirectly, through the formation of sensory skills and the development of fine motor skills.

The last group includes a Korean invention, which has recently begun to gain momentum.

How it works?

Of course, knowledge about the importance of acupressure on the functioning of the whole body has been accumulated since ancient times. Human internal organs and systems have a projection on the surface of the skin in the form of special zones or points, especially many of them on the upper and lower extremities. Impact on these zones allows you to activate the work of the corresponding organ, improve its condition and reduce negative manifestations.

A simple and completely harmless system, which was invented by South Korean professor Park Jae-woo. Undoubtedly, it does not have any side effects or complications, therefore the use of this technique in classes gives very good results in children with speech disorders of varying degrees of severity. Not only during the work of a qualified speech therapist - specialist, but also during use by parents at home.

For these purposes, a massager is used in the form of a round box similar to a chestnut. Inside it are two metal springs in the form of a ring, which are put on the fingers and toes. At the same time, pleasant sensations arise, sometimes it tickles, but it doesn’t hurt at all. The surface of the chestnut tree is uneven because it has thorns or pimples. Young patients are better off with the latter, they don’t inject themselves. They can be rolled in your palms, on your cheeks and other parts of the body.

Massage technique using Su Jok

To use the ring, put it on each finger in turn and roll it with force, until the skin turns red. You can also move a finger with a massager on it over active points on the palm.

There is also an option to put the spring on your fingers and remove it 20 times. Particular attention should be paid to areas where the skin is particularly sore. Under no circumstances should such a device be left on the hand after the massage is completed - this can lead to pinching of blood vessels and swelling.

To massage active points on the palms and fingers, a ball-shaped massager;

  • pick up and roll in palms clockwise and counterclockwise;
  • roll between fingertips;
  • thrown and caught;
  • squeeze tightly in your hand several times.

To work out the reflexogenic zones on the feet, place the ball on the floor and roll it back and forth with your feet.

By working the Su Jok ball on the feet, you can improve the condition of most organs and their systems.

Execution Rules

Of course, to conduct speech therapy exercises with the introduction of su jok influence, you will need special balls of different colors and rings. The uneven surface allows them to be used as effective massagers, as well as a tool for developing hand motor skills. General rules:

  • Of course, the impact should be pleasant and not cause a negative reaction in the child;
  • massage is carried out until the skin appears slightly pink and feels warm;
  • Such classes can only be carried out if the baby feels well and does not have a fever, rash or other manifestations of skin or infectious diseases;
  • You cannot leave the elastic ring on your fingers in one position for a long time, so as not to disrupt the blood supply;
  • Avoid intense movements so as not to injure the delicate skin of the person being massaged.

One of the effective techniques that ensures the development of a child’s cognitive, emotional-volitional, and speech activity is Su Jok therapy. This is an ultra-modern direction of acupuncture, combining the ancient knowledge of Eastern medicine and the latest achievements of European medicine. The Su Jok therapy method is one of the new integrative healing methods that have proven themselves to be the best.

For many millennia, man looked at his hand and did not notice the enormous potential that lies in his hand. At the end of the twentieth century, in 1984, South Korean professor Park Jae-woo proposed his original method of treatment, which he called “Su Jok therapy.” Translated from Korean, Su means hand and Jok means foot. Thus, Su Jok therapy is a method of therapeutic effects on the points of the hand and foot. The hand and foot have a unique similarity, a unique similarity with the structure of our entire body. Their stimulation has a pronounced preventive and therapeutic effect, therefore, having determined the necessary points in the correspondence systems (in the basic standard system of correspondence of the hands and feet and the standard system of correspondence to the body-system of the insect)

Rice. 1 "Basic Standard Brush Matching System and Insect System"

You can develop the child’s speech activity, as well as his mental processes. The hand acts as a “remote control” for those body systems that need correction.

The undeniable advantages of Su Jok therapy:

  • absolute safety of use. Improper use never causes harm to a person - it is simply ineffective.
  • accessibility and simplicity. Your hand and knowledge are always with you. Involves the use of various available means.
  • high efficiency. When used correctly, a pronounced effect occurs, which has been proven by many experts around the world.
  • universality of the method. Can be used by teachers in their work and by parents at home.

Su Jok therapy affects areas of the cerebral cortex in order to prevent and correct speech disorders through stimulation of highly active correspondence points on the hands and feet. Stimulation of correspondence systems promotes the maturation of nerve cells and the active functioning of the cerebral cortex.

Currently, there are quite a lot of speech and mental disorders in children of preschool and school age that require long-term correction. Therefore, it is advisable to include the Su Jok therapy method in the correctional work of the teacher. It does not cause negative reactions in children, but, on the contrary, helps to improve the general psycho-emotional state of the child.

One of the important techniques of Su Jok therapy is DIAGNOSIS, and then STIMULATION of the speech zones of the brain and organs of the articulatory apparatus at the points of correspondence.

Diagnostics at these points of correspondence to speech zones can be carried out by choosing one of the Su Jok systems. If you draw or imagine a person’s head on the pads of your fingers, then you can find speech zones on them

Rice. 2 "Speech zones"

The tool can be any available means: a match, a dull pencil, a key. A special Su Jok diagnostic tool is a diagnostic probe with tips of different diameters.

Examining children in the middle group, we found compactions on the phalanges of the fingers in the form of subcutaneous scars or balls at the points corresponding to the speech zones. We noticed that the more severe the speech defect, the more painfully the child reacts to touching his fingers, and children diagnosed with “motor alalia” pull back the handle when touching them. (Adele said: “Oh!”; Tosha - “FF! It hurts!”; Nazar winced, opened his mouth, sighed “Ah!.”; David moved away and bent his finger; Arseny: “That’s enough!”; Ruslan didn’t let me touch him at all). fingers (diagnosis: OHP-1ur, sensorimotor alalia)).

Carrying out diagnostics and comparing the diagnoses of children in the older group, it was revealed that these reactions weakened, became less pronounced and remained only in those children who still had severe speech difficulties (for example, OHP-1 level).

Based on this, we can conclude that by breaking up these subcutaneous seals on the fingers and stimulating the speech zones, the “Oh!” points. and “Ay!”, we can provide assistance, i.e. apply Su Jok therapy during speech therapy correction. This can be secured with a paper patch to the points of the correspondence system of various applicators, which can be artificial and various natural substances of mineral and plant origin: small crystals of various minerals, various pebbles, small glass beads, beads, buttons, as well as stimulants made of wood, plastics, plant fragments. A special method is seed therapy. Seeds must be alive and capable of germination. Being in conditions of elevated temperature and humidity typical of human skin, the seeds “wake up”, become more active, and intense energy exchange occurs between the seeds and the correspondence zone. Undamaged seeds are selected for treatment. These can be seeds of radishes, beets, buckwheat, peas, beans, flax, apples, grapes, pomegranates, viburnum, pumpkins and others. When choosing seeds, you should take into account their shape, similar to the shape of the seeds and internal organs (eye - black pepper; brain - walnut). Using any seeds is quite effective, even without taking into account their individual characteristics (color, shape). Considering that our children are small and they cannot accurately indicate the painful points, it is good to lay out a whole chain of seeds on the speech area, securing it with a paper plaster. These points should be massaged for 3-5 minutes 1-3 times an hour or 3-4 times a day.

Special applicators in Su Jok therapy, which are manufactured by the Subal enterprise in Moscow, are white and yellow metal stars, as well as magnetic stars, the therapeutic effect of which consists not only of mechanical action, but also of the influence of the magnetic field. Let me remind you that seeds and fragments of plants can act as natural magnets.

Since preschool children are still small, it is often difficult to accurately determine treatment points due to their bias. Then it is effective to use the TACTILE-KINESTHETIC STIMULATION (TCS) method.

It includes the use of pointed Su Jok balls, massage mats, miracle rollers, Kuznetsov applicators, roller massagers, finger pools, elastic rings, hex pencils, etc., in working with which you can use various model schemes, fairy tale therapy, logorhythmics. Massage of the corresponding areas should be carried out until redness and a feeling of warmth appear in them.

For example, an elastic ring is put on a finger and rolled over it repeatedly with pressure until a feeling of warmth and persistent redness of the skin of the massaged finger appears. This massage, in addition to its therapeutic effect, has a pronounced distracting, relaxing and calming effect.

When using Su Jok needle balls, it is important to consider their color. Color has an additional effect during correction. Using color will make the effect more subtle and detailed. You need to choose a ball of a certain color, depending on the child’s condition. If the child is excited, irritated, hot, or feels a feeling of heat, then you should use balls of cold colors: blue, white and even black, because color carries with it a certain type of energy. If the child is slow, lethargic, inert, fearful, has accumulated fatigue, he smiles little, then warm-colored balls are suitable: red, orange, yellow - their color energy will have a warming, warm, tonic effect on the body.

It is interesting to use finger pools with children for massage and stimulation of active points. Finger pools are open reservoirs filled with various fillers (small pebbles, glass balls, peas, beans, buckwheat, rice, semolina, etc.) and are used to perform various tasks: “Find a hidden object (small toy)”, “Find the figure according to the model”, “Find the letter and name it.” The use of the TCS method relieves fatigue, improves blood circulation, microcirculation of the hand, strengthens mental processes, and has a strengthening effect on the entire body.

Stimulation and massage of treatment points can be done with your hands. For example, in Japan, in all preschool institutions, for children starting from the age of 2, the technique of finger massage and self-massage is used, since the nerve endings on the fingers are directly connected to the brain. Massage of fingers starts from the “big” to the “little finger”. Rub the pads of the finger first, and then slowly rise to the base. It is good to accompany such a massage with funny rhymes.

THUMB MASSAGE is very effective, responsible for the functions of the human head and increasing brain activity. I will give an example of such a massage using the basic standard correspondence system. During massage, various techniques are used: linear, rotational massage, intermittent pressure, pinching, friction, vibration. We use the technique of fairy tale therapy: “Once upon a time there was a boy as big as a finger. In the mornings, he hardened himself: he washed himself, lightly stroking himself with a terry, fluffy towel (linear massage), spun on his favorite carousel (rotational massage), played with buttons (intermittent pressure), and loved to go for a walk in the forest in winter. There he built his favorite snow figures (pinching) and rubbed himself with cold, crisp snow (friction). In the evening, returning home, he took a warm, pleasant shower (vibration), lay down in his crib and was stroked by a soft, warm blanket (light stroking).”

NAIL PLATE MASSAGE, which actively stimulates speech zones, is extremely important for corrective work.

There are various techniques for preventive massage of nail plates. One of them:

"Pressing the nail in seven main directions"

- top down;

- in the direction opposite to nail growth;

- in the direction of nail growth;

- from the sides;

- in the area of the free edge of the nail in the Yin direction (inner);

- in the area of the free edge of the nail in the Yang side (outer).

And we’ll finish by “tapping” on any hard surface, this leads to intense stimulation of these areas. And “rubbing” - the fingers of each hand are bent so that the nails are at the same level (forming a row). After this, you need to intensively rub the nails of both hands against each other.

The use of the Su Jok therapy method in speech therapy practice helps to more quickly and effectively provide assistance to children with speech pathology. We began to use the Su Jok therapy method not so long ago; observations have shown that in children diagnosed with motor, sensory-motor alalia, and in children with general speech underdevelopment, the dynamics of the development of correct speech began to proceed approximately 30% faster than in those children to which Su Jok therapy was not applied.

We hope that the techniques of the Su-Jok method that we introduced you to will be useful to you in your work.

How to exercise with a chestnut ball

First of all, Su Jok ball and ring games are used to massage fingers and palms. Undoubtedly, you can use both balls and rings in classes. Sujok procedures will become more attractive and enjoyable for children if finger games are accompanied by interesting rhythmic verses.

Examples of games:

  • Ball Kids perform the actions described in the poems.

    I roll the ball around in a circle and move it back and forth. I stroke and clean my palms, as if I’m sweeping away crumbs from them.

  • Hedgehog First, the baby rolls the ball in his palm, then rolls it along each finger.

    The hedgehog was running on his palm, his legs were tired. There are needles on the back, oh so prickly. The hedgehog is very small and showed us his needles. And the needles also look like hedgehogs.

  • Magpie A tale about a magpie who cooked porridge. When pronouncing the words of a Russian folk nursery rhyme, we first move them across the palm of our hand. Then we put a ring on each finger, naming the next guest. We roll it to the base and remove it.
  • Press the ball on the baby's hand, imitating steps, then make the pressure weaker. Increase the impact again and speed up the pace, then press the ball one by one on your fingers.

    The she-bear walked sleepily, and behind her came the little bear. The kids came running and brought books in a basket. They began to open books and write on the leaves.

Working on your speech

Undoubtedly, working with grammatical and lexical categories, phonemic hearing, and sound pronunciation is also possible using balls:

  • One is many An adult rolls a ball on the table towards the child, while naming the object in the singular. The patient catches the ball and rolls it back, converting it to the plural.
  • Big - small You can build a game in a similar way if you transform words using diminutive - affectionate suffixes. For example, a fox is a fox, a cat is a kitten.
  • Syllable structure of a word Simultaneously pronounce the word syllable by syllable and spin the ball in accordance with the rhythmic pattern. One movement per syllable. Or tap a given rhythm with a massager. We thread our fingers into the springs, while observing the rule: as many syllables, as many fingers.
  • Phonemic hearing Listening to the words that an adult calls, go through as many sound tracks as there are sounds in the word.
  • Fine motor skills Write a letter on paper, then ask the children to roll the ball with their palm or fingers along the outline of the letter.
  • Coherent speech You can let yourself play with balls, developing creativity and imagination.

Exercises with a spring ring

In turn, put on and roll the sujok ring on each finger, while reciting rhymes, nursery rhymes or poems:

Family of fingers The first finger is grandfather, the second finger is grandmother, the third finger is dad, this finger is mom, and the little finger is me, this is my whole family.

Brothers Vasily - the eldest - to chop wood, Styopka - the pointer - pour water, Fedka - the middle one - to make a fire, Vanka - the orphan - to cook porridge, little Timoshka - to play the accordion, to amuse his siblings.

This massage, by activating certain zones in the cerebral cortex, stimulates not only speech, but also improves memorization. Undoubtedly, it improves concentration, activates thinking and other cognitive functions, which improves the result and makes the correctional work of a speech therapist more effective. Of course, parents can also apply the technique themselves at home.

So, today you got acquainted with an unusual way of speech therapy classes. I hope you found it interesting. As a result, you will begin to use the described techniques for the development of your children. Visit us again and you will learn about the most unusual techniques.

Why is memory impaired after a stroke?

The moment when a vessel in the brain becomes clogged or ruptures, a person may not notice, because... there may be no consequences of circulatory disorders. However, in situations where the circulatory system is significantly damaged and the blood does not deliver oxygen to one or another part of the brain, its cells stop functioning with proper efficiency and gradually die.

Cell necrosis is the main reason why various complications occur after a stroke: paralysis, speech dysfunction, memory loss.

Timely medical care and intensive rehabilitation sessions provide a chance to eliminate the negative consequences. Cells in a healthy area can take over the functions of those affected.

Scientists, based on cutting-edge brain research, view human memory in the light of three integral components that are involved in its formation and functioning:

  1. Short-term. The ability to store material in a short time period and small volume - about 20 seconds and several elements.
  2. Long-term. Unlimited in time and volume. Provides long-term storage of information.
  3. Operational. The ability to hold any amount of information and perform various operations with it in a short period of time.

Recording, storing and reproducing information is one of the main functions that makes a person capable and ensures his normal functioning. Each new source contributes to the formation of new neural connections. In a situation where a person needs to use the knowledge he has ever acquired, the neural connection is activated.

However, after a cerebrovascular accident, countless neurons die, and the connections that were formed between them are destroyed. This is how the process of memory loss occurs. Together with the killed neurons, a lot of material that a person has managed to accumulate during his life goes away.

The nature of the disorders depends on which area was destroyed and in which hemisphere of the brain critical changes occurred. The hemispheres work together, exchanging millions of impulses with each other every second. Their normal operation is impossible without the use of memory mechanisms. Therefore, it is very difficult to specify and accurately state what changes will be entailed by the death of one or another part of memory, and how this will affect a person.

In any situation, a patient with a stroke requires immediate medical attention and a long recovery process.
