A brief summary of the play “The Snow Maiden” with details of the actions.
Prologue.
Author: Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky
Not far from the capital of Tsar Berendey, Krasnaya Gorka is located. The moon is shining brightly. Heavy lumps of snow lie on the fluffy paws of the spruce trees.
The first appearance.
Surrounded by birds, Spring flew to the cold earth. Spring has come to revive the sleeping country, decorate the bushes with green carpets, and give warmth to the Berendeys. Vesna admits that 16 years ago she showed her “fickle temperament, changeable and whimsical,” and seduced Frost. Spring is glad to leave the gray-haired Old Man, but they have a daughter. A blizzard began to swirl, frozen birds clung to Mother Spring.
The second phenomenon.
Frost and Spring greet each other. It's time for Spring to replace the fierce Frost. Before parting, they must decide with whom to leave the Snow Maiden. The girl has grown up and will live in her forest house with squirrels, hares and foxes, here she is safe. This is how Father Frost reasons. The mother argues: a girl’s will is most important. The old man knows that Yarilo will destroy the Snow Maiden when love ignites in her. The parents decide to send their daughter to a Bobyl family.
The third phenomenon.
Vesna-Krasna caresses her daughter, asks if she wants to live with people? The Snow Maiden has long wanted to live in freedom, go to the forest to pick mushrooms and berries and play with her friends. The old man is afraid for his daughter and orders the devils to take care of the Snow Maiden. The snowstorm subsides, Frost leaves the land of the Berendeys, and Spring comes into its own.
Berendey shouting “Honest Maslenitsa!” They are carrying a sleigh with a straw effigy.
The fourth phenomenon.
People sing songs of praise to spring. Bobyl laments that the well-fed Shrovetide week is over. And Bobylikha, his wife, scolds: Bakula has been hanging out in other people’s yards all week, and there is no firewood in his hut. Bakula goes into the forest to chop firewood and meets the Snow Maiden there. The husband and wife marvel at the girl. The Snow Maiden happily goes to her new parents' house.
Act one.
The first appearance.
The wise king orders everyone to gather tomorrow in the reserved forest for a joyful walk until the morning, to praise the sun god - Yarila. Biryuch convenes the people of Slobozhka Berendeyevka to convey the royal decree. Guys, girls, the shepherd Lel, Bobyli, their rich neighbor Murash, and Snegurochka gather on the street.
Bobyl and Bobylikha reproach their adopted daughter for her harsh disposition: no matter how many suburban children wooed the Snow Maiden, she did not love anyone. The guys quarreled with their brides, amazed by the incredible beauty of the Snow Maiden. But the daughter of Frost is modest and not affectionate. The boys persuade the girl to be friends with the guys and choose who is richer. With a rich groom, the named parents will live without worries. The Snow Maiden reassures her parents: the time for love will come for her.
The second phenomenon.
Berendey the Sloboda argues with Murash: with whom will the shepherd Lel spend the night? Murash’s daughter Kupava is preparing to become his bride: he can’t be seen. Berendey has a young beautiful wife, there is no place for a shepherd there. It was decided to leave Lelya for the night with Bobyl.
The third phenomenon.
The Snow Maiden asks Lelya to sing for her, but does not know how to thank him. Lel is waiting for a kind word and a kiss; the Snow Maiden’s attention is dear to him. The girl values Lelya’s songs highly, above words and kisses. The shepherd asks for a flower as a gift, and the Snow Maiden picks a flower for him. But Lelya becomes bored with the unkind Snow Maiden, he throws away the flower and hurries to his cheerful friends.
The fourth phenomenon.
The Snow Maiden is annoyed that Lel left her and went to others, where it is more fun. The girl does not yet know how to love, but for the first time she feels mental pain and melancholy, looking at the happy Lel and his friends.
Fifth phenomenon.
Girls and boys are walking along the street. The brides are angry with the guys because they exchanged them for the beautiful Snow Maiden. The guys feel that they are to blame and ask for forgiveness.
The Snow Maiden stands aside. Kupava takes pity on the Snow Maiden and shares his joy with her: a rich young man, Mizgir, is marrying her! When Mizgir arrives, everyone will have fun and run circles on the Red Hill.
Mizgir, accompanied by his servants, arrives to meet the suburban children.
The sixth phenomenon.
Guys and girlfriends surround Kupava and do not give Mizgir his bride. The groom gives them rich gifts and pays a large ransom for Kupava. The guys are unhappy that a stranger came into their settlement and took their girlfriend, but they don’t start a fight, they humble themselves. Kupava has replaced her cheerful friends with a sweet friend and wants to have fun with everyone on the last day before the wedding. The girls sing a cheerful song. The Snow Maiden leaves the yarn and gathers with everyone on Krasnaya Gorka to meet Mizgir.
The seventh phenomenon.
Mizgir renounced his former bride Kupava, now his heart belongs to the Snow Maiden. The offended Kupava calls the Snow Maiden a homewrecker and an envious woman. The named parents are happy about the rich groom, they tell the Snow Maiden: “don’t even think about refusing.” The daughter does as her parents tell her.
Shepherd Lelyu has to leave Bobyl's house, he cries and leaves.
The eighth phenomenon.
Kupava complains to Father Murash in tears: her fiance betrayed her. Previously, Berendeys always lived honestly, girls and boys trusted each other. The Berendeys knew no treason. But for Mizgir, vows are not chains, but only words; he can easily fall in love and fall out of love. Kupava curses Mizgir and, following his father’s advice, goes to Tsar Berendey to seek protection and righteous judgment.
Act two.
The first appearance.
Tsar Berendey paints one of the pillars in his palace. At the king’s feet two buffoons are arguing, a little further away the guslars are singing Berendey’s songs.
The second phenomenon.
Bermyata greets the king and assures that everything is fine in the kingdom. Berendey doubts the well-being of his people: every year it becomes colder in the kingdom, Yarilo is angry for the coldness of people's hearts. The Berendeys were overcome by vanity and envy. People have forgotten pure selfless love. The wise king planned on Yarilin's day to unite all the young brides and grooms in marriage, so that the sun would not be angry.
The third phenomenon.
Kupava asks the Tsar to tell him about his misfortune and find protection. The kind Berendey listens, consoles Kupava and promises to punish Mizgir. The offender will be judged in front of all the people. Heralds call people to the royal court for a people's trial.
The fourth phenomenon.
The king speaks to the people: “Love has been desecrated! How to punish the culprit? Bermyata advises Mizgir to marry the offended bride. But Mizgir only needs the Snow Maiden. And Kupava will not marry her offender. By the people's court, Mizgir is doomed to exile; he will answer to the gods for his crime. Instead of making excuses, Mizgir asks the king to look at the Snow Maiden.
Fifth phenomenon.
The Snow Maiden with her named parents comes to Berendey. The king admires the beautiful girl; he has never seen such a beautiful flower anywhere before. He decides to give the Snow Maiden to the lucky chosen one at sunrise - this is the real sacrifice for Yarila! But the Snow Maiden does not have a sweet chosen one. Then the Tsar will give Snow Maiden as his wife to the one who melts her heart before dawn. The beauty of the palace, Elena, suggests that only Lel, the child of the sun, is able to sow love in a girl’s heart. Mizgir swears that he will light a fire in the Snow Maiden’s soul, and she will become his wife. The king is reassured by the promises of Lel and Mizgir, he is waiting for dawn to happily meet the sun.
Act three.
The first appearance.
Young Berendeys lead circles in the sovereign's forest. The king is proud of his people: they work hard and dance with all their heart. The shepherd sings for Berendey. The king tells Lel to choose a girl so that she will kiss him for the song. Lel chooses Kupava, brings her to the king and kisses her.
The guys are jealous of Lelya, they can also sing good songs, no worse than a shepherd. Brides make up with guys: Malusha with the Smoking Room, Radushka with Brusila.
The second phenomenon.
The shepherd calls Kupava, but meets the Snow Maiden in the forest. Soon the Berendeys will go to greet the sunrise, and Lelya will lead the lead singer. The Snow Maiden is sad that Lel will deceive her again and choose another friend. The shepherd promises that he will go to the holiday with the Snow Maiden.
The third phenomenon.
The Snow Maiden joyfully awaits a new day, her wreath has withered, and in the morning she needs a new one. Mizgir's soul is full of love for the Snow Maiden, and he finally meets his beloved. Mizgir presents her with priceless pearls, but the girl does not pay with love. Mizgir scares her and she runs away from him.
The fourth phenomenon.
The shepherd captivated Beautiful Helen with his enchanting singing. She does not want to return to the palace when the handsome Lel is nearby.
Fifth phenomenon.
Bermyata finds his wife on Lel's chest. The husband is not surprised, he has already seen this, but still reproaches Elena for obscenity.
The sixth phenomenon.
Dawn is coming soon. The Snow Maiden is waiting for the shepherd; she has prepared herself a new wreath. But the shepherd again runs from the Snow Maiden to Kupava.
The seventh phenomenon.
Kupava cordially thanks Lel for saving her from dishonor. And Lel calls Kupava her joy. The Snow Maiden is in confusion: Lel called, beckoned, asked to wait, and he himself runs to Kupava. For Yarila, Kupava and the shepherd are more pleasing - they have the fire of love in their eyes, but the Snow Maiden’s heart is empty. The Snow Maiden is deceived, she feels jealousy, but there is no love yet. She asks her mother Vesna to tell her about love.
Act four.
The first appearance.
Mizgir runs away following the vision of his beloved. It is Leshy who takes him deep into the forest.
The second phenomenon.
The Snow Maiden approaches the lake and calls Mother Spring. She wants to “love, but she doesn’t know the words of love at all.” Spring presents her daughter with a wreath of wondrous flowers, and the whole world around her is transformed at once. The mother teaches to stay as far away from Yarila as possible, otherwise death will come with love.
The third phenomenon.
The Snow Maiden goes to the forest, where she meets Mizgir. He wanted to catch her all night, but found only a ghost. The Snow Maiden says beautiful words of love to Mizgir, Mizgir hugs her to himself. The Snow Maiden warns that the sun is her death and calls for shelter from the rays. But Mizgir does not believe her; he wants to introduce his bride to the king.
The fourth phenomenon.
The Berendeys, led by their king, go to meet the sun. The people stood on both sides of the valley and, accompanied by cheerful songs, united the young Sloboda residents in a happy marriage. But the sun is still hiding behind the clouds.
The good sovereign of the Berendeys meets Mizgir and the Snow Maiden and blesses them for a happy marriage. The Snow Maiden confesses her love to Mizgir, the fire of passionate feeling torments her, and with the first bright ray she dies. Mizgir cannot live without his beloved, he throws himself into the lake.
“The sun knows whom to punish and have mercy on,” says the king. There is no cold girl, Yarilo will no longer be angry with his people. The severe frosts and long winters are gone. The people feast and glorify the Red Sun in their songs.

A very brief retelling of the play "The Snow Maiden".
Snow Maiden, the child of Spring and Frost, has long dreamed of a free life: playing with her friends and listening to the songs of the shepherd. The father and mother give the girl to the poor Bobyl family. Young guys admire the beauty of Spring's daughter. But the girl is shy and not affectionate. The peasants are angry with their adopted daughter: they will not see a rich son-in-law and a full life.
Mizgir, Kupava’s groom, comes to the settlement beyond the river to meet the bridesmaids. Having met Snegurochka, he forever forgets about Kupava, now his beloved is Snegurochka.
Kupava asks Tsar Berendey for righteous justice, and the wise ruler punishes the offender. The people's court sentenced Mizgir to eternal exile.
The Tsar admires the beauty of the Snow Maiden. To make a sacrifice to Yaril the sun, the king will give the Snow Maiden as a wife to the one who ignites the fire of love in her before sunrise. Only the shepherd Lel can teach you to love a cold heart.
Lel promises Snegurochka that he will go to meet the summer sun with her, but he deceives and chooses Kupava. The Snow Maiden is crying, she feels jealousy, but not yet love.
Then the Snow Maiden prays to Spring to give her an unknown human feeling. Spring fulfills her wish, now the Snow Maiden will fall in love with whoever she meets first.
The Snow Maiden meets Mizgir. He swears his love to his chosen one and is ready to marry her. The girl reciprocates his feelings. Mizgir and his bride go to the wise Berendey to receive a blessing. But the bright sun is destructive for the Snow Maiden, she dies in the arms of her groom. Mizgiryu does not want to live in this world without his beloved, he throws himself from Yarilin Mountain into the lake.
